Fall mornings start at 50° and end at 75° — and your kid has opinions about jackets. Here's the simple layering formula that keeps them comfortable from the bus stop to the playground, without the backpack full of abandoned hoodies.
Forget bulky coats in October. Kids run warm, move constantly, and overheat fast. What works is three thin layers they can peel off themselves.
1. The Base Layer
A breathable tee or long-sleeve against the skin. This is the layer that matters most: it manages moisture when they run, so choose something soft and breathable like our organic cotton kids' tees or a bamboo polo. A fabric that gets sweaty and stays sweaty makes for a miserable morning; bamboo and light organic cotton wick and dry.
2. The Middle Layer
A light sweatshirt or cardigan, like the Kids' Bamboo Sweatshirt or a French terry sweatshirt. Zip-ups and loose pullovers beat tight ones: a five-year-old can manage them alone, which means the layer actually gets used instead of tied around a waist.
3. The Shell
A light jacket only when it's windy or wet. Most fall days don't need it.
Down below, one good pair of French terry joggers handles the whole temperature swing — warm enough for the bus stop, breathable enough for recess.
The Backpack Kit
Keep one gallon zip bag in the backpack all season: a spare base layer, a pair of socks, and a thin beanie. That's it. Ninety percent of “I'm cold/wet/uncomfortable” situations are solved by one of those three things.
The Morning Shortcut
Check the afternoon high, not the morning temperature, when you lay out clothes. Dress for the high, then add layers to survive the morning. It's the difference between a kid who's comfortable all day and one who's carrying a coat home.
Let Them Feel the Cold (a Little)
If they refuse the middle layer, let the bus stop decide. A slightly chilly kid who chooses their own cardigan tomorrow learns more than one who's been wrestled into it today. Pack it; don't fight it.
And When They Get Home…
The layers come off, and the soft stuff goes on. Cooler evenings are what our Bamboo Ribbed PJ Sets were made for — the after-school change of clothes that tells their body the workday is over.
